Writing Your Vows…

“You can’t measure love, nor can you adequately describe it to another person. Perhaps more than any other emotion, you know it when you feel it.”

I recently found a book while browsing through Anthropologie one day titled, LOVE Quotes and Passages from the heart, edited by B.C. Aronson andjust had to pick it up. Instantly, I thought of one of my favorite movies/series, Sex in the City. I flashed back to that moment when Carrie and Big are laying together in bed and she pulls out her library book to begin reading love passages from great authors. What I then thought about was the moment right before the I do’s, when Big called Carrie because he couldn’t think of the right words for his vows and how it ultimately all ties together.

Writing your own vows may sound easy at first however, just like the passage that I shared above, describing your love for one another can be as hard as it gets. As you are trying to come up with the words to say to your special someone on your wedding day, everything stops. You begin to worry that you might not say the right thing or what you plan to say won’t come out the way you had intended or you may even become speechless.

If you find that you are stuck in the moment and can’t figure out how to put those feelings down on paper, just like anything else out there, the key to finding the right words are often that spark of inspiration that comes from the most unexpected moments.   Here are a few places to look:

– Quotes from movies like The Vow, Love Actually, The Notebook, Pretty Woman, Dear John, etc… (Ladies, I know you know the list because I can go on forever!!)

– Reminisce on the feelings you felt when you first met – Were you star struck the first second your eyes met or did you meet unexpectedly in a run down bar while doing karaoke?

– Reflect on growing old together and all of the things you are excited to share with each other – Think about your plans for life, where you want to go and who you want to be and how you cannot imagine those experiences without each other.

– Quote a song that is significant to your relationship – Is there that one song that comes on the radio and all you can do is think about your man or woman?  Do you both sing at the top of your lungs to Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” or Leona Lewis’ “Bleeding Love” every time it come on the radio?  Other love songs to relate back to: Beyonce’s “Love on Top,” “We Found Love” by Rhianna, or Diana Ross’ “Endless Love” (there are seriously so many out there!).

So, if you still find yourself sitting in front of a blank white paper the day before your wedding and all else fails, I suggest you remember this little tip, “Just write this, I will love you. Simple and to-the-point.”

I hope this can help to get that pencil moving!

All the best,

Alex
